Looking to secure a new position?

Here’s our guide to the DO’s!

Last week’s liquidation of Carillion has left 19,500 UK employees looking to secure new employment within their relevant sectors. Sub-contractors affected by Carillions demise will also add to that number and then traditionally, January is a time when people across all industries and at all levels, decide to make a fresh start.

January 2018 is certainly a busy one for job hunters.

Regardless of why you are in the job hunt, the goal for all is the same; to secure the best opportunity possible.

We’re a positive bunch here at Veritas and so we’ve put together some of our best tips on the DO’s when starting a new career search.

DO

Update your CV.

Take time to reflect on your most recent period of employment. Assess your responsibilities and achievements. Don’t be afraid to celebrate your successes. What you have come to consider your norm, could be transformational for a new employer. Spend a good period of time doing this as it’s your chance to detail everything that you’re proud of and your first chance to stand out from your potential rivals.

DO

Consider working with a recruiter.

A good recruiter will have trusted relationships with a network of clients. At a time when you need to put yourself ahead of other job hunters, having someone who enjoys a trusted relationship with the recruiting business will ensure that you are someone that they actually get to consider. Sending your CV into a generic careers inbox will only but you in a pile of other faceless CV’s. At such a busy time, such a pile might never be reviewed.

Here’s a blog that we posted previously about working with a recruiter.

DO

Be protective of your CV.

We often hear that a job hunter has uploaded their CV to a number of different job boards and is speaking to dozens of recruiters. We understand that this might feel like the right thing to do at the time but it is a counterproductive approach.

If your details are in a number of different places and been controlled by a number of different people, you have lost control.

Even if you have a brilliant CV, work in a ‘in demand’ niche and are a proven achiever, you are now potentially portrayed as desperate, you’ve lost your exclusivity. You could also be causing conflict with different parties claiming ‘ownership’ of your details and fighting aggressively to secure their potential fee, scuppering your chances of even progressing to interviews.

DO

Take your time.

Depending on why you’re in the job hunt, time might be something you think you don’t have but you do. Take time to consider and assess everything before sending your CV. This will help to ensure that you are only entering into the recruitment process with companies where you could see yourself working. Take time to plan what you want to get from an interview. What are the most important factors for you in regards to the job, the future opportunities, the people, the culture of the business? Take time to think and feel following an interview and then give your honest feedback. This will make sure that you only progress with the processes that you ultimately want to move forward with.

Taking time throughout the process will help to ensure that should an offer of employment be forthcoming, you’re in a comfortable, informed and positive position to accept or decline. Don’t let anyone push you into a corner when making a decision about your career. It’s your career, look after it!
